- At the Farewell to MadMen special
perspective in simplicity
Hello!
As a designer, I have found that simplicity with small details to be the most impressive, and is the biggest influence for the material I create; taking the time to notice a design and why it is impactful, drives me to use the same methods to produce artwork with the same feeling. Confidence in one’s own design is the most important attribute I think a design can convey; presence and voice accompany confidence, as well as simplicity and cleanness, and these elements are what I strive for: less is more. I find myself mostly drawn to layouts and gridding designs for editorials and publications because of this reason as well; the structure, organization, and uniformity fascinates me because its dismissive underlying purpose, serves as the most important design to display the contents of the publication. I like how a simple grid of a page can influence the reader’s opinion and interest of whatever the contents happens to be. The grid is the basis of most, if not all, designs, and I like having the control over the organization of the typography, copy, pictures, etc. to look like a true collection without taking away from the art. Being a visual person, the designs I gravitate towards are those with less words and more visual intrigue, like Apple graphics; the solid colors, product display, and simplicity mimic Apple’s gear towards an international audience through their print ads and packaging designs. Their confidence behind solely showing just their product against a pink background provides elegance and situational satisfaction for the consumer- there is no mystery.
Graphic Design is an applied medium that provides me to expand as an artist and to develop the widest range of personal traits that I can think of. I love that there will be a continuation of new technology for this artistic field, and a never-ending learning process for myself; furthermore, the Graphic Design requires creativity, organization, time, practicality, reasoning, public speaking, etc., which I think are the most key components one needs to succeed, and is what I plan to do.
